The last major roundup of seasonal produce from the farmers market for the year and there is still a surprising amount of greenery available to buy. Things will get distinctly more ‘rootey’ in January and February, but for now, lets still enjoy what we have!
Barnes and Hoggetts' Seasonal Produce
As the frost starts to hit the fields, some of the fresh produce at the market is starting to look past its best. But don’t let looks deceive you; there are still plenty of incredibly tasty treats to be found!
Although there are still a few remaining tomatoes and peppers at the market, it’s time to shift focus to great winter vegetables. This is the brassica’s moment to shine along with orchard fruit and squash.
This weekend is almost certainly, absolutely the last chance to get yourself tomatoes, peppers, ground cherries and other fruit and veg destroyed by frost so stock up now while you can!
There is an almost palpable tension in the market this week; soon we will have a hard frost that will end the season of tomatoes, peppers and the like. The stands are still overflowing with great produce, but we are on the cusp of the quick road down into winter.
This week we are focusing on rich simple ingredients that work well on cooler nights for robust flavours and an easy time in the kitchen; great for if you have friends over for dinner but don’t want or need things to take too much effort.
A wonderful bounty of seasonal produce featuring loaves and fish (and vegetables) that might not quite feed the five thousand but will certainly keep you full throughout the week. It’s a good time to start using these great root vegetables and robust greens in the first cold weather soup of the year!
As we start to turn the corner into fall, summer still has a few delights for us. The tomatoes are getting riper and they wont be around for much longer so it’s a good time to think about sauces and stews you can freeze to keep the taste of summer going a few months longer.
As we have cooler weather and the nights draw in it’s a good time to heat up our roundup of seasonal produce with a range of fresh chillies. Along with some late season pea-greens, incredible littleneck clams and juicy concord grapes we have another great bounty on our hands.
