Seasonal Produce Report: What’s Fresh July 27th 2013

The word I would use to describe this week’s crop of seasonal produce: juicy. Be it succulent steak, mouthwatering watermelon or super sweet nectarines, the heatwave has passed and the produce is ripe for the picking.

watermelon haloumi and tomatillo salad

Watermelon, Halloumi and Tomatillo Salad

After the excesses of yesterday’s rich, in-your-face steak I want to bring you something lighter and altogether more cleansing. It’s a sneaky little salad made using Watermelon, Halloumi Cheese and charred Tomatillos: simple, fast and a really fun and interesting mix of flavours.

Steak and Succotash

Perfect Sirloin Steak; Tomatillo Succotash

I will concede that this is a personal preference, but I think filet mignon is not really worth it. Sure, it’s meltingly tender, but the price you pay for that softness (other than the price you pay) is something of a lack of flavour. I would rather something a little tougher with a meatier flavour to […]

Weekly Menu for July 26th : Simple Strong Flavours

After last week’s menu which had some baking and a longish list of ingredients for a tasty curry, I wanted to have a simple week. Simple doesn’t have to mean dull though – we have some great robust flavours and minimal cooking. A classic tomato sauce with some pan-fried gnocchi; Green Sauce (salsa verde to […]

Fishcakes with Jalapeño and Lime

Fish cakes with Jalapeño and Cilantro; Apple Salad with Pomegranate Molasses

Fish cakes are an undervalued part of a good home cook’s repertoire. They fit into that world of second-string meals; generally used as a means for consuming leftover potatoes and fish. perilla leaves stuffed with beef and mint

Perilla Leaves Stuffed With Beef and Mint

I picked up a stack of Perilla Leaves from Lani’s Farm without too much idea what I was going to do with them. These beautiful, heart-shaped leaves with jagged edges are the size of a small palm and have a really nice fresh flavour that has hints of mint, apples and even that clove-aniseed flavour […]

Green Sauce, Grilled Fish, Potato Salad

Green Sauce, Grilled Fish, Potato Salad

I will admit that I started off describing this dish as grilled fish with salsa verde but that is, I think, doing my home country a disservice. For Green Sauce —a rough chopping of herbs along with other bits and pieces to bring a little piquancy and kick— has been used in British cooking in […]

pan fried gnocchi

Pan Fried Gnocchi with a Simple Tomato Sauce

The hardest thing I’m going to find about writing this recipe is letting you into my secret world of pan-fried gnocchi. I used to quite like gnocchi. Then a few years ago I had a meal at Supper in the East Village that rocked my world. It was some sort of roast meat—well cooked but […]

Seasonal Produce Report: What’s Fresh July 20th 2013

With the heatwave we’ve had this week, I think it would be fair to say that no one feels particularly fresh. Much like humans, the plant world has gone into survival mode where everything tries not to overheat or dry out too much.
